The museum stands on the right bank of the Vistula in the Dębniki district, opposite Wawel. It was created on the initiative of Andrzej Wajda to house the Japanese collection of Feliks Jasieński, and its wave-shaped building was designed by the Japanese architect Arata Isozaki.
The core of the collection is older Japanese art: woodblock prints, arms and armour, crafts and textiles. Alongside them the museum shows temporary exhibitions devoted to contemporary art, design and architecture of Japan and other Far Eastern countries.
An important part of the museum's work are classes introducing Japanese culture: the tea ceremony, bonsai, ikebana and suiseki, as well as lectures and demonstrations. A Japanese language school also operates in the building. The terrace offers a view of the Vistula and Wawel Hill.
