The Old Jewish Cemetery on Ślężna Street now operates as the Museum of Cemetery Art, a branch of the City Museum of Wrocław. Almost five hectares hold some twelve thousand gravestones, making it one of the best preserved Jewish burial grounds in this part of Europe.
Matzevot and imposing family tombs draw the eye, with neoclassical, neo-Gothic and Art Nouveau details. The stone slabs are covered with symbols — blessing hands, jugs, broken columns — that speak about the deceased. Professors, artists and industrialists connected with the city rest here.
Visitors walk along alleys amid lush greenery that gives the site the character of a park. The museum runs educational classes and guided walks that help decipher the gravestone symbolism. A plaque on the wall commemorates 450 Jews who died in the First World War.
