The Abbots' Palace houses the Department of Modern Art of the National Museum in Gdańsk. The former residence of the Cistercian abbots stands next to the Oliwa cathedral and the park, and its historic interiors provide an unexpected setting for painting and drawing from the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
The galleries present works by leading Polish artists: Jan Matejko, Olga Boznańska, Jacek Malczewski and Aleksander Gierymski, as well as prints, sculpture and ceramics. A separate place belongs to twentieth-century painting, a collection of theatre memorabilia and works by Chagall, Kandinsky and Braque.
The permanent exhibition “A New Look. Gallery of Polish Contemporary Art” presents artists who made their debut after 2000. After the visit it is worth walking through the Oliwa Park and looking into the nearby cathedral with its famous organ — all within a few minutes on foot.
