Archikatedra Oliwska stands in the northern part of Gdańsk (Danzig), on the grounds of a former Cistercian abbey founded at the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries. Its narrow, exceptionally elongated Gothic body with a Baroque facade makes it one of the longest churches in Poland and a clear landmark on the Cistercian Route.
The heart of the interior is the famous 18th-century Oliwa organ, in its day regarded as the largest in Europe and still used during regular concerts. Attention is also drawn by the elaborate Baroque high altar, the chapel of St John of Nepomuk in the north aisle and dozens of tombstones, epitaphs and sculptures.
A quick visit takes a quarter of an hour, but lovers of sacred art spend much longer here. Check the opening times in advance so that sightseeing does not clash with services and organ concerts. The cathedral is surrounded by the Oliwa Park, a natural extension of the visit.
