Zamość Town Hall stands on the Great Market Square, in the middle of a Renaissance urban layout inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Surrounded by arcaded townhouses, with a tall clock tower and its distinctive fan-shaped staircase, it is regarded as one of the most recognisable town halls in Poland and the most photographed building in the city.
The building was erected in the 17th century in the Mannerist-Baroque style and extended later. The double staircase leading to the first floor was added during a subsequent remodelling. Every day at noon a bugle call sounds from the tower, played to only three points of the compass. Legend has it that Hetman Jan Zamoyski forbade playing towards Cracow, a city he disliked.
The interiors serve administrative functions, housing the city offices and the municipal police, so the building is not open to sightseeing. Visitors may enter the Tourist Information Centre and the Ratusz Photography Gallery. The square in front, with a view of the market frontages, is accessible without restrictions.
