The town hall on Tarnów's market square

The town hall stands in the middle of the market square in Tarnów and is one of the city's most recognisable buildings. It was erected at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, and later rebuilding gave it its Mannerist character. Today it houses the Gallery of Old Art, a branch of the District Museum in Tarnów.

Architecture

The structure blends Gothic and Renaissance features: a slender clock tower, an attic crowned with mascarons, blind arcading on the façades and a decorative portal of Pińczów limestone. The details are best appreciated by walking right around the building — it looks different from each side of the square.

The exhibition

The permanent display presents the noble culture of the old Polish Republic: Sarmatian portraits, military and hunting weapons from the 17th to the 19th century, silver tableware, porcelain and glass from Polish works. The route leads through historic interiors — the Council Chamber, the Commoners' Hall and the Eastern Hall.
