Rynek 28, Chełmno
The town hall in Chełmno stands on the western side of the market square and is regarded as one of Poland's finest Renaissance monuments. The earliest building went up at the end of the 13th century, but its present form comes from remodelling in the 16th and 18th centuries and from reconstruction after the damage of the Second World War.
Four portals, the ornate attic crowning the façades, the tall tower with clock faces and the stone balustrade all catch the eye. The viewing terrace offers a panorama of the old town, best followed by a walk along the surviving town walls.
Since 1983 the building has housed the Museum of the Chełmno Region — before that it was the seat of the town authorities and council. The exhibitions cover the history of Chełmno, recall the physician Ludwik Rydygier and present a gallery of paintings by the local artist Antoni Piotrowicz. The building itself is a listed monument.
