Zamość
Zamość Fortress encircles the historic centre of the town founded by Hetman Jan Zamoyski. Work on the defences began in the 16th century, they were still being extended in the 19th, and the fortress remained a military installation until 1866.
The Zamość defences were besieged five times — during the Khmelnytsky Uprising, the Swedish Deluge, the Great Northern War and the November Uprising. The effectiveness of the bastion layout made Zamość one of the strongest fortresses of the old Polish Republic, and today it is among the best-preserved complexes of its kind in the country.
Bastions, cavaliers, gates and underground galleries have survived; some structures now serve as museums and public buildings, while the former glacis has become a town park and green belt. Several routes cross the site — fortress, scenic, nature and cycling; the longest take several hours to complete.
