Boyen Fortress lies in the western part of Giżycko, on the isthmus between lakes Kisajno and Niegocin. Built in the 19th century as one of the strategic works defending the borders of East Prussia, it remains one of the better-preserved complexes of its kind in Europe.
Earth ramparts, bastions, gates and brick barracks have survived, and most of the buildings are open to visitors. A museum inside the walls covers the history of the fortifications and everyday garrison life, displaying weapons, uniforms, barrack and stable interiors, along with dioramas devoted to the history of Giżycko.
It makes a good stop on a trip through the Great Masurian Lakes — combining a walk across the extensive fortress grounds with a dose of military history. Educational workshops are run for children and young people, and in summer the site comes alive with open-air events, the largest being the Boyen Fortress Festival.
