The tower stands on the castle hill in Kazimierz Dolny, next to the castle ruins, and is considered the oldest building in town. It was raised at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, several decades before the castle itself, whose functions it took over for a time — hence its traditional name, the lower castle. The cylindrical tower, about 10 metres high, rises above this stretch of the Vistula valley.
Once the castle was built, the tower served as a defensive post controlling access to the river crossing. Later accounts also credit it with the role of a river lighthouse, a customs guard post, a prison and even a treasury — none of which can be confirmed. Thick walls and few window openings betray the building's military purpose.
Steep stairs lead to the top, rewarded by one of the finest panoramas in the area: the bend of the Vistula, the roofs of the old town and the loess ravines of the Kazimierz Landscape Park. A ticket usually covers both the tower and the nearby castle ruins, so it is worth seeing them in one go.
