The Last City Gate of Sandomierz

The Opatów Gate closes the northern entrance to the old town of Sandomierz and is the only one of the former city gates to survive. It was built in the Middle Ages, at the end of the 14th century, as part of the ring of defensive walls. Together with the whole old town complex it belongs to an area recognised as a monument of history.

Architecture

The Gothic, rectangular tower with a passage at ground level is crowned by a Renaissance attic added in the 16th century — it gives the gate its distinctive, articulated silhouette, visible from afar. Fragments of the defensive wall adjoin the structure, and Opatowska Street still channels traffic exactly as it did centuries ago.

Inside

The interior is open to visitors. Successive floors house exhibitions on the history of the town, on films shot in Sandomierz and on nearby attractions, complemented by photographs taken by local enthusiasts. Stairs lead to a viewing terrace with a panorama of the old town, the Vistula valley and the Pieprzowe Hills. A souvenir shop operates on site.
