Kołobrzeg Fortress is not a single building but a complex of fortifications scattered across the city. The modern fortress began to take shape in the 17th century on the base of older, medieval defences, and its story is bound up with the successive sieges of the town. Sightseeing means walking through Kołobrzeg and tracking down the individual bastions, redoubts and forts.
Marked out with visitors in mind, it leads past more than a dozen surviving structures. Along the way you pass the Ravelin and the Lębork Lunette, the Pomorze Bastion, Fort Wilczy, the Stone Redan, the Marsh and Salt Redoubts, the Radzikowo Gate and the Knights' Academy. The most striking point is Fort Ujście with its lighthouse at the mouth of the Parsęta.
The route is long and spread over a wide area, so the visit feels more like a city walk than a stop at a single monument. Some of the fortifications are not adapted for sightseeing, so care is needed when climbing walls and ramparts.
