The Leaning Tower stands on the edge of Toruń's old town, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was one of several dozen towers raised along the medieval city walls. Its deviation from the vertical is pronounced enough to be noticed with the naked eye from several dozen metres away.
Legend explains the tilt as punishment for the sins of a Teutonic knight; another version links it to the alleged heresies of Copernicus. In reality it is caused by the sandy, shifting ground near the Vistula on which the heavy brick structure was founded. A popular game among visitors is to stand with heels against the wall and try to keep balance.
The tower served in turn as a defensive post, a municipal prison, then as flats, offices and even a restaurant. Today it houses the offices of a cultural institution and is not open to visitors — it is admired from the outside only. It is worth walking along the adjoining remains of the defensive walls and on to the Vistula boulevard, with its classic panorama of Toruń.
