The Kołobrzeg lighthouse stands at the entrance to the harbour, on the main platform of a 19th-century fort. The present tower was raised just after the Second World War on the surviving foundations of the fortifications. Earlier lighthouses had operated in the area since the 17th century, but stood elsewhere and were destroyed many times over.
The octagonal brick tower measures about 26 metres, and its light is visible from almost thirty kilometres away. Stairs inside the shaft lead to the viewing gallery. From the top the eye takes in the fishing and commercial harbour, the beach, the pier and the panorama of the spa district.
The fort's rooms house a Museum of Ship Models and a mineral exhibition, while an additional display introduces the lighthouses of the Baltic Sea basin. After the visit you can stop at the café in the building and buy souvenirs. The lighthouse lies at the end of the seaside promenade, within walking distance of the centre and the pier.
