Poland's tallest earth-fill dam

The Niedzica Dam blocks the Dunajec valley where the Pieniny Mountains meet the Podhale region, creating Lake Czorsztyńskie. The earth embankment is 56 m high and over 400 m long, making it the tallest structure of its kind in the country. Construction dragged on for more than two decades and was contested from the start by defenders of the valley's nature.

What to see

A wide promenade runs along the dam crest, with a panorama of the Czorsztyn reservoir, the lower Sromowce lake and the ranges of the Pieniny, the Tatras and Magura Spiska. A large-scale 3D mural, Moc Żywiołów (Power of the Elements), makes it look as though water were pouring over the structure. The hydroelectric plant can be seen on a guided tour.

The surroundings

Dunajec Castle in Niedzica rises above the dam, and the ruins of Czorsztyn Castle stand on the opposite shore; a boat links them in summer. Walking and cycling paths ring the reservoir, and below the dam begins the stretch of the Dunajec leading to the Pieniny gorge.
