ul. Stary Rynek, Elbląg
Brama Targowa closes Stary Rynek street in Elbląg from the north and is the only surviving element of the town's medieval fortifications. The brick tower was raised in the 14th century as part of the ring of defensive walls and for centuries served as the main entrance to the town from the trade route.
The building was remodelled several times and was badly damaged during the Second World War. In the 1950s its medieval form was restored. In front of the gate stands a monument to the baker's boy; legend says the lad cut the drawbridge ropes and saved Elbląg from being seized by the Teutonic Knights.
The clock tower offers a view over the old town, the port and the valley of the Elbląg river. In season, roughly from May to September, a tourist information point with souvenirs and city materials operates inside. The visit is short and combines well with a walk through the rebuilt old town and along the canal.
