Ozimek, Ozimek
The iron suspension bridge in Ozimek spans the Mała Panew river in the south-western part of the town, beside the grounds of the Malapanew ironworks. It was erected in the first half of the nineteenth century for the works and is regarded as the oldest surviving structure of its kind on the continent.
Its most striking elements are the massive cast-iron pylons set on both sides of the crossing, between which the carrying chains are suspended. The design was innovative at the time and served as a model for similar bridges elsewhere in Europe. The original structure has survived unchanged to this day.
The bridge is listed as a monument of technology. Vehicle traffic has been withdrawn and it can be crossed on foot only. Seeing it takes a quarter of an hour and pairs well with a walk along the river and with the ironworking history of Ozimek.
