Samsonów 30, Wieś Samsonów
The ruins of the “Józef” ironworks stand in Samsonów in the Zagnańsk commune, Świętokrzyskie Province. The plant was one of the investments of the Old-Polish Industrial District, whose development was championed by Stanisław Staszic. The name commemorates Józef Zajączek, viceroy of the Kingdom of Poland, who laid the cornerstone of the building.
The ironworks operated from 1816 to 1866 and produced around 800 tonnes of pig iron a year. During the November Uprising it made weapons for the insurgents, for which Russian troops burned the plant down in reprisal. Further fires and the depletion of local ore deposits meant that it was never rebuilt.
The walls of the blast furnace, fragments of the production halls and the distinctive hoisting tower have survived — the whole site is listed in the register of monuments. The grounds are open to all, and a walk among the brick walls takes a quarter of an hour. The ruins complement a tour of the other technical monuments of the Świętokrzyskie Mountains.
