The Dwór Artusa Cultural Centre occupies an imposing building on the Old Town Market Square in Toruń, opposite the town hall. The name goes back to 1385, when a meeting house of the merchant Brotherhood of St George stood here, a place of gatherings, feasts and public life in the old Hanseatic town.
The Prussian authorities ordered the original court to be demolished at the beginning of the 19th century. Its successor housed the brotherhood and later the Municipal Theatre; that building was pulled down as well. Today's third edifice was raised with state rooms, a restaurant and guest rooms, and after the Second World War it was used by Nicolaus Copernicus University.
Since 1995 the building has housed a municipal cultural institution. The programme includes performances, concerts, film screenings, exhibition openings, art workshops and themed meetings for children and adults. The state rooms can be seen with a guide; dates are limited, so it is worth booking tickets in advance.
