Dom Kata in Kowary occupies a historic townhouse on Zamkowa street, in the centre of a town lying at the foot of the Karkonosze Mountains. The museum is devoted to justice as it was once administered: it displays the tools an executioner used and explains the realities of that infamous trade. It is a small, intimate collection that takes about an hour to see.
The exhibition consists of replicas and objects connected with torture and the carrying out of sentences — from stocks and the pillory to more elaborate devices. The story told here revolves around how the law used to be enforced and what punishments particular offences carried. Exhibits may be touched, and photography and filming carry no extra charge.
Given the nature of the collection, children under twelve are admitted only in the care of an adult, and more sensitive visitors should allow for the grim subject matter. The venue also hosts private events staged among the museum's props. Kowary itself is a good base for trips into the Karkonosze.
