The tower of the Pauline monastery at Jasna Góra in Częstochowa is around one hundred metres tall and ranks among the tallest church buildings in Poland. Its main body dates from the 18th century, while the slender upper section was rebuilt in the 20th century. It stands inside the fortified monastery complex, so a climb is usually combined with a visit to the basilica, the chapel of the Miraculous Image and the defensive walls.
Only stairs lead to the top. After some 170 steps visitors reach the lower terrace, and after about 300 the upper one. There is no lift, so the climb takes a little stamina. From above you can see the whole of Częstochowa with the avenue running straight to the monastery, and in clear weather also the hills and rock outcrops of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland.
On the second storey there is a historic chiming clock with 36 bells playing Marian hymns, audible across the entire courtyard. The tower is open to visitors seasonally, from spring until late autumn, and access is suspended in strong wind or rain.
