Rynek Podgórski 1, Podgórze, Kraków
Ghetto – Trail of Remembrance 1941–1943 is an urban route commemorating the Kraków ghetto, created by the Germans in Stare Podgórze. Behind its walls more than ten thousand Jews from Kraków and the surrounding area were confined. The trail covers seven points within the former boundaries of the closed district and lets you read its layout in today's city fabric.
The walk starts at the tenement house at Rynek Podgórski 1 and leads in turn along Dąbrówki and Janowa Wola, Józefińska, Węgierska and Limanowskiego streets, ending at Rękawka. At each stop stands a board with a description and a map showing the location of the further sites — the ghetto gate, the seat of the Jewish Council, the old people's home, the infectious diseases hospital.
The route is short and flat, so it takes about an hour, and the texts on the boards are given in Polish, Hebrew and English. It is a walk that calls for reflection rather than a scenic attraction. It is worth combining with the nearby Ghetto Heroes Square and the rest of Podgórze, where further traces of the district's history survive.
