Wieś Chudów
Topola Tekla grows in Chudów in Upper Silesia, close to the ruins of a Renaissance castle. It is a Canadian poplar of the Robusta variety, regarded as the thickest tree of its kind in the country; the trunk measures several metres in girth, so it takes a handful of people holding hands to encircle it. It was probably planted in the 18th century and was declared a natural monument in 1981.
The inside of the trunk is completely decayed, which has created a natural chamber. A wooden door has been fitted into it, and inside there is a small room known as the Winnie-the-Pooh house, with three little tables, chairs and benches. It is this detail that draws visitors, especially children, and sets Tekla apart from other monumental trees.
An information board with the basic facts about the natural monument stands beside the tree. A visit takes little more than ten minutes, so it is best combined with the castle in Chudów, where fairs and open-air events are held. Despite its decayed core, the poplar comes into leaf every spring.
