A castle near the Odra

The castle ruins in Tworków stand in Silesia, some 15 kilometres from Racibórz, in the commune of Krzyżanowice. The three-winged residence, laid out on a plan close to a horseshoe, was raised in the second half of the 16th century on the foundations of an older, medieval structure. Despite the damage, the mass of the building still impresses with its scale and surviving details.

From fire to permanent ruin

The castle lost its roof and interiors in a fire in 1931 and has since functioned as a so-called permanent ruin — secured but not rebuilt. Through the efforts of the commune the grounds were tidied up, part of the walls reconstructed and the tower restored as a viewpoint, offering a panorama of the village and the flat surroundings of the Odra valley.

Visiting

The setting around the ruins is park-like and suits a quiet walk, also with children. Seeing the site takes roughly an hour including the climb up the tower. An evening visit is striking, when the walls are floodlit. Access to the tower may depend on the season, so it is worth confirming availability in advance.
