The remains of the Schaffgotsch family palace, once known as the Palace on the Water, stand in Kopice at the edge of an extensive landscape park of about 70 hectares. Fragments of walls, towers and decorative detail survive, making it one of the most picturesque ruins in the region.
The residence was rebuilt several times before taking on its final neo-Gothic form with neo-Renaissance elements. The name comes from the Schaffgotsch family, who bought the estate in 1859 and steadily enlarged it. The palace survived both world wars and only fell into decay afterwards — first through neglect, then after a fire in the 1950s.
The ruins are fenced off and closed to visitors because of the condition of the structure; the building can be seen and photographed only from outside. A walk through the surrounding park reveals traces of the former layout, which once held more than a thousand sculptures — none of which have survived.
