Wieś Łubowice
The ruins of the von Eichendorff family palace lie in Łubowice in Racibórz County. The residence was built by the grandfather of Joseph von Eichendorff, one of the leading poets of German Romanticism, who was born in this very house.
The palace was inhabited until the Second World War, and one of its rooms served as a memorial chamber for the poet. After 1945 the building was abandoned and quickly fell into ruin. The site was cleared and opened to visitors by the Łubowice Society of Friends of Joseph von Eichendorff.
Fragments of the outer walls, partition walls, cellars and an old floor survive to this day; the tidied grounds can be explored safely. A local legend tells of tunnels running from the site to Rudnik and Turze. A cemetery with the graves of the poet's parents lies nearby.
