Belweder stands on Belwederska Street in central Warsaw, right next to the Royal Łazienki Park. The name comes from the Italian belvedere — “beautiful view” — and it suits the setting above the park slope. The Neoclassical body with its columned portico dates from the 19th century, but the origins of the building go back to the 16th century.
Its residents included Stanisław August Poniatowski, the brother of Tsar Alexander I and the German Governor-General Hans von Beseler. Between the wars the palace belonged to the Polish state and housed Marshal Józef Piłsudski and the presidents Gabriel Narutowicz and Stanisław Wojciechowski. After the war it served the communist authorities and, until 1994, the office of the president.
After a thorough renovation Belweder returned in 2010 to its role as a presidential residence and is used for official occasions with foreign guests. The interiors are open to visitors: you can see the state rooms and a collection of mementoes of Józef Piłsudski. Entry only with a prior booking.
