Esterka's Castle stands on a hill in Bochotnica in the Puławy district, a few kilometres from Kazimierz Dolny. Of the stronghold only the foundations and a tall fragment of wall remain, towering over the valley of the Bystra river and visible from the road.
A popular tale says the castle was a gift from King Casimir the Great to Esterka, but no source confirms it. The building was most probably raised at the end of the 14th century for the Firlej family. It later changed owners many times and is said to have sheltered a band of robbers preying on travellers.
The castle was in time rebuilt as a Renaissance residence, but soon fell into decay and threatened to collapse. Legend speaks of an underground passage linking it with the castle in Kazimierz Dolny. The ruins lie on private land, so entry is at your own risk.
