Rynek, Żywiec
The Market Square in Żywiec is the main and largest square in town, framed by restored tenement houses. The town hall rises above them, and a fountain with a figure of Saint Florian, patron of firefighters, stands in the centre. The square is fully open to the public and makes a natural starting point for exploring Żywiec.
In one corner of the square stands a stone, four-storey bell tower, the only surviving element of the town's original medieval fabric. Its austere form stands out clearly from the later houses and shows better than anything else how old the layout of this square is.
The square serves as a stage for civic ceremonies and cultural events, including the Beskid Culture Week. Cafes and restaurants operate in the tenement houses, and stalls sell souvenirs and local products. From here it is a short walk to the co-cathedral, the Żywiec castle with its park and the brewery.
