Plac Dietla 1, Szczawnica
Plac Dietla is the main promenading space of Szczawnica, set in the centre of the spa town at the mouth of the Grajcarek valley. It was laid out on the filled-in bed of the Szczawny stream and served as the town's market square until the 1960s. Today it is a pedestrian precinct around which the town's tourist life revolves.
The frontages are formed by a group of wooden and brick villas from the 19th and early 20th centuries, styled after Swiss and Austrian architecture — the showpiece of the rebuilt spa quarter. In the middle stands a fountain with a sculpture of a woman carrying a jug, and nearby an obelisk commemorating Józef Dietl, the physician and balneologist regarded as the father of Polish spa medicine.
A mineral water pump room, cafés and restaurants operate around the square, and from here paths lead to the raft landing, the lift up Palenica and the trails of the Małe Pieniny range. It is the natural starting point for exploring Szczawnica.
