Gdańsk
Westerplatte is a peninsula at the mouth of the Dead Vistula on Gdańsk Bay, in the northern part of Gdańsk (Danzig). Before the war it housed the Polish Military Transit Depot, and on 1 September 1939 the site became the scene of the first fighting of the Second World War.
The Monument to the Coast Defenders rises on a mound above the area. A marked trail leads from the passenger boat landing past the remains of the barracks, guardhouses and the former military compound; walking it takes about two hours. The route can be covered alone or with a guide.
The grounds are open and free of charge, and most paths have a hardened surface. In summer excursion boats run here from the Gdańsk old town. The wider historical context is presented by the Museum of the Second World War in the city centre.
