Rynek, Olkusz
The Market Square marks the centre of the old town of Olkusz and dates back to the end of the 13th century, when the town grew rich on silver and lead mining. Little of the original architecture survives, but a thorough regeneration carried out in 2011–2013 restored the square's formal character.
The most interesting feature consists of the remains of the 14th-century town hall, uncovered during archaeological excavations and displayed within the paving of the square. The undergrounds are open to visitors as the Podziemny Olkusz route, which tells the story of the town. Two fountains, period-style lamps and restored townhouses along the frontages complete the picture.
The townhouse at Rynek 20 houses the PTTK Regional Museum, and a few steps away stands the Basilica of St Andrew with its Gothic polyptych. Olkusz lies on the western edge of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, so the square combines well with a trip onto the nearby trails.
