Plac Marii Konopnickiej lies on the main axis of the town, right in the centre of Suwałki. It was created in the 19th century as a market place, later functioned for decades as a municipal park, and after regeneration completed in 2010 returned to its original, open square form.
The focal point is the monument to Maria Konopnicka — the writer was born in Suwałki, and the present monument replaced an earlier one made of stone. At its foot stand small figures of King Błystek and Kocie Oczko, characters from the tale of the dwarves and orphan Marysia. The frontages consist of Classicist and eclectic townhouses, and a modern ground-level fountain operates on the eastern side.
This is the town's main meeting place and venue for cultural events, handy for a short walk with children — in summer the fountain provides them with refreshment. The Regional Museum and the representative Kościuszki street are both close by.
