Plac Tadeusza Kościuszki, Szczebrzeszyn
The market square in Szczebrzeszyn, officially named after Tadeusz Kościuszko, forms the centre of this small town on the edge of the Roztocze region. The town hall of 1840 stands in the middle, surrounded by low residential buildings and townhouses that preserve the scale of the old settlement.
The most photographed feature is the beetle monument, a nod to Jan Brzechwa's poem about the beetle buzzing in the reeds — one of two such sculptures in the town. The Museum of Old Clocks, with a collection of wall and floor timepieces, also operates by the square. The square itself serves as a venue for fairs and open-air events.
Within a few minutes' walk stand the traces of Szczebrzeszyn's multicultural past: the churches of St Catherine and St Nicholas, a Renaissance synagogue and a former Orthodox church. The town lies at the gateway to Roztocze National Park, so the square often becomes a starting point for further trips.
