Rynek Mariacki, Węgrów
The Market Square in Węgrów, also known as Rynek Mariacki, is the main square of a small town in Węgrów County, on the eastern edge of Mazovia. It has kept a legible rectangular layout with low buildings along its frontages, and its centre is taken up by a fountain with changing jets, popular in the evenings.
The square is dominated by the baroque Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, raised to the rank of a minor basilica and called the Marian Basilica. The 18th-century Dom Gdański (Gdańsk House), built by merchants from Gdańsk, also draws attention, as do the remains of the college of the Communist Priests in the south-eastern frontage. Information boards describe the walls of the former town hall uncovered during archaeological work.
This is a stop for a short walk: circling the square and looking inside the basilica takes half an hour. Benches and tree shade invite a rest, the ground is flat and fully accessible for pushchairs, and dogs are welcome.
