Rynek, Krapkowice
The market square in Krapkowice is the representative plaza of this town on the Odra river, in the southern part of the Opole Province. Its medieval layout has survived: a regular quadrangle of frontages with streets running out from the corners. Today the square serves as the town's living room — a place for meetings, strolls and open-air events.
At the centre stands a fountain with a figure of Melusine, half woman and half mermaid, known from local legends about luring men. The frontages are formed by historic townhouses; the oldest dates from the 17th century, and the facade of the house at number 4 has kept its 18th-century appearance. One of the elevations bears the coat of arms of Krapkowice — a reminder of the former town hall.
The town hall that adorned the square for centuries burned down in the mid-19th century; the authorities decided to demolish the ruins and the building has never been recreated. Visiting the square takes half an hour and combines easily with a walk down to the Odra. The surface is even and admission is free all year round.
