Rynek, Wałbrzych
The market square in Wałbrzych is the main plaza of the old part of the city; it once served as a marketplace where traders from the whole area gathered every week. Today it hosts residents' meetings, concerts, cultural events and regular antique fairs. After being tidied up it gained a clear layout and plenty of room for strolling.
The square is enclosed by townhouses, mostly from the 18th and 19th centuries, with facades typical of the old bourgeois Wałbrzych. A fountain takes the central spot, surrounded by benches, while small trees give shade on hot days. The ground floors house restaurants, cafés and small businesses.
It is a good starting point for exploring the city: the historic streets of the centre are close by, and Książ Castle and the former mining grounds lie within a few kilometres. Seeing the square itself takes half an hour. The plaza is open all year, free of barriers for strollers, and there is no charge.
