Rynek, Nowy Targ
The market square in Nowy Targ is one of the larger town squares in Lesser Poland — it covers about a hectare and measures roughly 138 by 110 metres. It is the centre of local life and a starting point for exploring the Podhale region. Entry is free and the square is open at any hour.
In the middle stands the nineteenth-century town hall, raised on the site of an earlier, destroyed building. Its clock tower with a glazed lantern, cupola and spire stands out. The building houses the Podhale Museum. The square is lined with historic townhouses, mostly from the nineteenth century; numbers 9 and 10 are worth a look — the first with rusticated pilasters, the second with a wrought-iron balcony.
A fountain on the square is popular with children in summer, and benches stand around it. One of them holds a sculpture of Hanka the highlander girl reading the weekly “Tygodnik Podhalański”. In summer restaurants, cafés and ice-cream parlours set out their garden seating.
