Rynek, Jarosław
The Market Square in Jarosław is the heart of a Subcarpathian town that grew up on the medieval trade routes linking Ruthenia, Hungary and Silesia. The square has kept a spatial layout going back to the 14th century, and its scale is set by tall frontages of arcaded townhouses.
The middle of the square is occupied by the town hall built in the Renaissance period, remodelled in the 19th century in Neo-Renaissance style and still the seat of the town authorities. Around it stand ornate burgher houses: the Orsetti, Attavanti and Rydzikowski houses. The Orsetti House holds the town museum, while beneath the Rydzikowski House runs the Underground Tourist Route through the cellars of former merchants' warehouses.
Cafés, restaurants and souvenir shops occupy the frontages, and the south-western part of the square opens onto St Michael's Square, left after a collegiate church that no longer exists. Seeing the square itself takes half an hour, with the cellars considerably longer.
