Plac Łuczkowskiego, Chełm
The market square in Chełm, officially named after Edward Łuczkowski, lies right in the centre of this town in the Lublin region. It is the main meeting place for residents and a natural starting point for sightseeing, particularly busy in summer. Old town streets radiate from it towards the most important local monuments.
The square preserves the reconstructed remains of a town hall whose origins go back to the 15th century, together with a rebuilt wooden municipal well — today one of the symbols of the place. There is also a monument commemorating those who died for the homeland. The frontages consist of historic townhouses, some renovated, others still awaiting repair.
The restored townhouses hold shops and restaurants where you can take shelter from sun or rain and plan the rest of your route. From the square it is a short walk to the Chełm Chalk Tunnels and to the hill with the basilica and bell tower. The square itself can be seen in half an hour.
