The heart of Kamienna Góra

The market square, officially named plac Wolności, is the main square of this town at the foot of the Kamienne Mountains and the best place to begin a visit. It was laid out on a rectangular plan, and the medieval street pattern running out from its corners has survived almost unchanged. The centre is filled with lawns, flower beds and benches that offer shade on hot days.

Buildings and monuments

The square is lined with Baroque and Classicist townhouses from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, some of them retaining the arcades typical of Lower Silesian weaving towns. House number 11 holds the Museum of Lower Silesian Weaving, a reminder of the craft that supported the town for centuries. There is no town hall on the square — it stands a few hundred metres away.

Practical notes

The square is an open space, accessible all year and free of charge. Cafés and restaurants with outdoor seating operate on the ground floors, and the square hosts concerts and civic events. The surface is even, so walking here with a pushchair or a dog is easy.
