Rynek, Racibórz
The market square in Racibórz was laid out in the 13th century and remains the town's most important public space — a venue for ceremonies, fairs and everyday meetings. It has compact frontages of townhouses and a clearly marked centre with a Marian Column.
Racibórz is one of the few Polish towns without a historic town hall. The original building that stood in the middle of the square was destroyed, and its successor, fitted into the row of townhouses, also burned down. The burgher architecture around it has survived, and among it stands out the Gaszyn villa, which once hosted the Prussian king Frederick William IV.
From the square you can see the towers of two churches counted among the town's finest monuments, and the lanes of the old town lead off the plaza. Restaurants and cafés occupy the ground floors, putting out terraces in summer. The square is fully accessible, flat and comfortable for walking with a pushchair.
