Plac Obrońców Pokoju, Opatów
The Market Square in Opatów has the shape of an elongated rectangle and its history goes back to the Middle Ages. Today it bears the name Plac Obrońców Pokoju and remains the centre of town life: markets, fairs and cultural events are held here.
The town authorities are housed not in a free-standing building but in the oldest surviving townhouse on the square, with fine arcaded galleries on pillars. In the middle of the square stands a reconstruction of the town well, surrounded by benches and greenery, and beside the town hall a monument to Colonel Ludwik Topór-Zwierzdowski, one of the commanders of the 1864 uprising.
Medieval merchants' cellars linked by corridors have survived beneath the square. They are open as an underground tourist route about 400 metres long, which makes the square the starting point for the most interesting sightseeing in town.
