Pomnik Bartosza Glowackiego, Tarnobrzeg
The market square in Tarnobrzeg is a spacious plaza with low buildings, mixing historic and post-war townhouses. For decades the town lived from sulphur mining, and that industrial pedigree sets it apart from typical small towns of the region, even though the layout of the square itself remains traditional.
Little of the old architecture has survived. In the late 19th century a fire swept the town, destroying much of the timber housing that then stood around the square; the present frontages are largely later. On the square stands a monument to Bartosz Głowacki, a hero of the Kościuszko Uprising who came from the area.
The plaza serves as a meeting place and a venue for open-air events. There are plenty of benches, greenery and flower beds, plus a fountain whose jets change intensity. Cafés and restaurants operate in the surrounding townhouses, with terraces in summer. Entry is free and the ground is flat and open all year.
