Rynek, Kruszwica
The Market Square in Kruszwica is the main square of a town known above all for its Mouse Tower and the legend of King Popiel. It lies by Lake Gopło, a few minutes' walk from the tower, so both sights can easily be seen on a single visit.
The restored square is surrounded by townhouses, mostly from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, in eclectic and Art Nouveau styles. The centre is taken up by a green with trees and benches that gives shade on hot days. On the square stands the church of St Therese of the Child Jesus, built in 1928.
Until 1939 a monument to Christ the King stood on the square; it was destroyed by the Germans during the Second World War. Today the square serves as a meeting place, hosting markets, fairs, cultural events and official ceremonies.
