Rynek, Siewierz
The market square in Siewierz was laid out in the Middle Ages and for centuries served as the town's commercial and political centre; Siewierz was long the capital of an independent duchy. The square lies in the very centre of town, near the ruins of the castle of the Kraków bishops, and today is divided into a pedestrian part and a car park.
Trees shade the cobbled section and benches line its edges. The eye is drawn to a fountain showing the two maidens of Siewierz, heroines of the folk song „Od Siewierza jechał wóz”. Beside it stands a bench with cast figures of the song's authors. Colourful townhouses form the frontages; in one of them Tsar Alexander I stopped during a journey.
A busy road runs around the square, so watch for cars when crossing between the frontages. A visit takes a quarter of an hour and is best combined with the castle ruins and the Romanesque church of St John the Baptist. The square also hosts town events and fairs.
