Plac Adama Mickiewicza, Pilica
The market square in Pilica, officially named after Adam Mickiewicz, was laid out in the 14th century and served as a trading place for centuries. Today it is the quiet centre of a small town in the Zawiercie district, on the edge of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland.
The brick town hall draws the eye; it was reconstructed in 2014 following the pattern of the former building, and inside there is an exhibition devoted to the region. A restored, roofed municipal well also stands on the square. Around it a few tenement houses from the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries have survived — the rest of the buildings were consumed by fires.
The medieval layout of the square has survived largely intact, which makes a walk through Pilica a lesson in how small towns used to be planned. A few minutes away stands the church of St John the Baptist from the 14th century, with an 18th-century wall and a bell tower from the early 19th century. Nearby it is worth visiting the palace complex with its extensive park.
