Plac Nowy Rynek, Łowicz
The Triangular Market Square in Łowicz, also known as the New Market, is one of the few surviving medieval squares in Europe with a triangular outline. It lies in the centre of this Mazovian town, alongside the Old Market with its classic quadrangular shape and the smaller Przyrynek. Its unusual plan still sets it apart from typical chartered market squares.
The frontages are formed by historic tenement houses, the oldest dating from the 17th century. A fountain stands in the middle of the square, and the outline of the foundations of the no longer existing town hall has been marked out in cobblestones. In the northern part there is a monument to the insurgents of 1863.
The former marketplace now serves as a meeting point: fairs, festivals and open-air exhibitions are held here, and in summer restaurant gardens open. A visit takes about a quarter of an hour and combines well with a walk to the cathedral basilica and the museum with its display of Łowicz folk culture.
