Rynek Trybunalski, Piotrków Trybunalski
The Tribunal Market Square in Piotrków Trybunalski is small — roughly 63 by 73 metres — yet it is the best-preserved part of the old town. Its name recalls that from the 16th to the 18th century the town hosted the Crown Tribunal, the highest noble court of the Commonwealth, which made Piotrków one of the country's key centres.
The frontages are formed by elegant townhouses, mostly from the 19th century; many carry plaques describing events and figures linked to the town. A town hall once stood in the middle of the square but was demolished in the 19th century — the outline of its foundations is now marked in the paving. Nearby are a plaque marking the Tribunal's 400th anniversary and a replica of the town pillory.
The square is a meeting place for residents and a natural starting point for exploring the old town. In summer it fills with restaurant and pub gardens, and it often hosts cultural events. Seeing the square itself takes a quarter of an hour.
