Rynek, Rybnik
The market square in Rybnik has served as the main municipal plaza continuously since the Middle Ages. It is the representative space of this Upper Silesian town and the most convenient starting point for exploring its centre.
The square is dominated by the Classicist town hall from the 19th century with its five-storey clock tower; it houses the registry office and the Rybnik Museum with exhibitions about the town and the region. The frontages are made up of tenement houses from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, which survived both world wars, so the architecture has kept its original character.
It is worth looking out for the commemorative plaques on the façades — they mark, among others, the visit of Marshal Piłsudski, the place where St John Sarkander preached, and the site of the earlier wooden town hall. In summer the surrounding venues set out their gardens on the square, so it works well as a rest stop on a journey.
